Missions & Opportunities to Serve

Local Needs Missions

The local needs program is our foremost priority. Needs become particularly acute in winter when it is dark and cold, and also during the ‘off seasons’ when area jobs are curtailed. Our local needs budget helps cover those who are desperate and have nowhere else to go for help.  We coordinate these efforts with other area churches to ensure the needs are valid and shared. UCAF provides the assistance needed that may mean the difference between homelessness and shelter.

The United Church of Angel Fire (UCAF) dedicates 10% of the church’s annual undesignated income to support our mission programs. In addition, donations are made through occasional special offerings or individual member contributions.

UCAF Missions

Taos Men’s Shelter

The Taos Men’s Shelter is located at 220 Albright Street in Taos, NM. The shelter provides housing on a nightly basis to 15 – 20 homeless men. We continue to provide the shelter with funds and donations to assist them in their upgrades, maintenance, and personal care.

Heart of Taos

HEART of Taos is a community-funded nonprofit organization that provides assistance for women and children exiting homelessness through:  emergency assistance, support and housing; homelessness prevention by providing emergency financial assistance, landlord advocacy, case management and money management counseling; and street outreach delivering sleeping bags, toiletries, soap, water, clothing, and food to women and children living on the street.  The United Church of Angel Fire has pledged to continue contributing $100 per month in support of HEART of Taos for the fiscal year 2020-2021.

School Support

Each year, Eagle Nest Schools publish lists of the classroom supplies needed for students in each grade from pre-kindergarten through middle school. There are often children whose families are unable to purchase the necessary supplies.  Teachers will frequently dip into their own pockets to alleviate this need.  As one of our mission services, UCAF purchases School Packs for each grade level, pre-k through 12.  In addition, individuals from UCAF generously purchase additional school supplies and back packs to supplement used, lost or missing supplies.

ALM (Always Loving Mankind)

The ALM Food Pantry is an ongoing community wide organization designed to alleviate hunger in the Moreno Valley and Cimarron communities. With the generosity of time and financial support from virtually all aspects of the community the program is able to address a vital need in the area. Presently we are serving around 85 families comprised of more than 219 individuals.

Members of the UCAF congregation have been extremely helpful with funding ALM this year through specific donations, helping facilitate grants and multiple generous memorial fund donations.

Food For Kids

While Eagle Nest School provides breakfast and lunch for needy students during the week, there is no guarantee their food needs will be met over the weekend. To fill this need, the Food for Kids Program was established in 2009 by Jim Trott, a leading member of our church congregation. Currently the program is managed by Peggy Trott and Gina Bonner in conjunction with Kelly Koehlinger, the school secretary.

The program works as follows: Items for food packs are purchased and assembled by volunteers and delivered to the school through coordinated food deliveries with the ALM Program.  The current corona virus pandemic has changed the processes for deliveries when students are not in school.  The Food for Kids program has decided to continue services over the 2020 Summer and during remote school from home times.

This year, the number of children served varied from 20-25 children served, with a cost of $120.00 per child for the year. The Trott’s continue to be strong supporters of the program and we appreciate the support from UCAF and are working to find additional support to keep the program viable.

Firewood Angels

The United Church of Angel Fire is a principal supporter of Firewood Angels, a program administered by the Moreno Valley Ministerial Alliance. Volunteers gather, block and split wood to meet the needs of local residents who depend on firewood for heat during the winter and are not financially able to purchase what they need. The United Church of Angel Fire has purchased equipment, provided funding for operating supplies and is the source for the majority of the volunteers. During the winter of 2022-2023 Firewood Angels delivered 117 pickup loads of wood to our neighbors in the Moreno Valley. Splitting wood for winter delivery takes place May through September and tasks are available for all skill levels. Consider volunteering for this worthy ministry.
